Apple consistently releases new macOS updates to enhance security, performance, and compatibility with modern apps and hardware. However, many users continue to use outdated versions of macOS, which can pose serious risks.

The following macOS versions are considered outdated and no longer receive security updates from Apple:

  • macOS Sierra (10.12)
  • macOS High Sierra (10.13)
  • macOS Mojave (10.14)
  • macOS Catalina (10.15)
  • macOS Big Sur (11)
  • macOS Monterey (12)

Once a macOS version stops receiving updates, Apple no longer patches security vulnerabilities, leaving your system exposed to potential cyber threats.

*** macOS Ventura (13) will stop receiving updates in 2025 ***

Why You Should Upgrade

1. Security Risks

Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in outdated operating systems. If your macOS no longer receives security patches, your data, personal information, and online activities are at higher risk of malware, ransomware, and hacking attempts.

2. Software Compatibility Issues

Many developers optimise their applications for the latest macOS versions. If you’re using an older macOS, you may find that newer apps or updates are incompatible, limiting your ability to run essential software.

3. Performance and Stability Improvements

Apple fine-tunes each macOS release for better speed, stability, and efficiency. Older macOS versions may experience sluggish performance, crashes, or memory leaks that hinder your productivity.

5. Bug Fixes and Optimisation

Apple regularly fixes system bugs that may cause glitches or crashes. If you stick with an older macOS, you won’t benefit from these essential fixes, making your Mac less reliable over time.

How to Check for macOS Updates

To see if your Mac is eligible for an update, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
  3. Click on Software Update.
  4. If an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it.

If you’re still running an older macOS, it’s time to upgrade. Staying up to date ensures a secure, optimised, and feature-rich experience for your Mac. If your Mac does not support an updated version of macOS, it may be time to replace your computer. Please contact info@bondigroup.ie for more information.
